Private browsing

If you don’t want Google Chrome to remember your activity, you can browse the web privately in Incognito mode.


On a computer


  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, click More More and then New Incognito s

You can also use a keyboard shortcut to open an Incognito window:

  • Windows, Linux et Chrome OS : Press Ctrl + Shift + n.
  • Mac : Press ⌘ + Maj+ n.


You can switch between Incognito windows and regular Chrome windows. You'll only browse in private when you're using an Incognito window.   


On a tablet or an Android phone


1. Open the Chrome application on your Android tablet or smartphone. Chrome

2. To the right of the address bar, tap More   More and then New Incognito tab.

3. A new window is displayed. You should see the Private Browsing icon in the top left corner.  Incognito mode


If the message "Taking screenshots isn't allowed by the app or your organization" is displayed, open the web page in a normal Chrome tab.  It is possible to switch between private browsing and standard Chrome tabs.  Your browsing is only private while using a private browsing window


What happens when you use private browsing?   


Chrome does not record your browser history, cookies, site data or informations entered in web forms. 

Any files that you download and favourites that you create are kept.  

Your activity remains visible on websites that you visit, and is also visible to your employer or educational institution and your internet service provider.


If you do not want Google Chrome to record your activity, you can browse the Web privately using the private browsing mode.
